Leeds Asylum Seeker Support
Network (LASSN) launched Leeds Press Gang in November 2008. The group is made
up of volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds including refugees, local
workers, students and activists. The aim of the group is to challenge the
negative perceptions members of the public have regarding asylum seekers and
refugees through sharing positive stories. We organise events, training
workshops, produce a quarterly newsletter and other multimedia content, all
coordinated through monthly meetings.
Design Team
We are looking to recruit four volunteers to be part of a
design team, for ‘One World’ magazine and for the Press Gang blog.
The role would require the volunteers to commit at least 1-2
hours per week. Volunteers must be flexible as around the print period for the
magazine these hours may slightly increase.
The design team will report to the Print Editor and the
Coordinator.
Essential Criteria:
- · Interest in design
- · Reliable
- · Able to commit to the specified hours
- · Able to be flexible with hours when the magazine comes to print
Experience of digital design would be an advantage, but
this is not essential.
The role:
- · Initially, re-designing the Press Gang blog, to create greater cohesion between the blog and the magazine.
- · Maintaining the blog, updating design where necessary.
- · Designing the magazine’s cover.
- · Producing the layout of the magazine
- · Sourcing images for the magazine, ensuring that they are appropriate and copyright free.
- · Assisting the Marketing Officer in producing promotional materials, ie. Posters

Digital Team (Bloggers)
We are looking to recruit a
team of 4 volunteers who can produce posts for the Press Gang Blog on a weekly
basis. Each volunteer will be expected to produce at least one blog post per
week.
The Digital Content Editor
will commission posts to be written, but also volunteers are encouraged to
write their own posts. If a post has not been commissioned then bloggers must
pitch their ideas to the digital editor. At the fortnightly meetings blog posts
and pitches will be planned out, but there is flexibility in this.
You will need to be self-
motivated, good with deadlines, able to write well and work well as part of a team.
We can provide any support you may need, if it be to arrange interviews or
partner you up with an experienced refugee journalist. The Digital Content
Editor will provide a final editorial view to your posts.
The digital team can work
remotely, but will have to meet with the Digital Content Editor for 1-2 hours
on a fortnightly basis.
The Digital team will report
directly to the Digital Content Editor.

Reporters ( a few hours a month)
We are looking to recruit a volunteer reporters to write for One Planet Leeds magazine and other outlets including blog sites and press releases. You need to be self motivated, good with deadlines, able to relate write well, liaise with others, be part of team. We can arrange interviews, partner you up with an experienced refugee journalist and will providing final editing for your articles.
