Stop the Deportation of Roseline Akhalu

We've just received an email from the campaigning group No-Deportations, about the potential deportation of Roseline Akhalu. Please take a moment to sign the online petition or send an email to the Home Office demanding that they do not deny Roseline the critical medical help she needs.

(text c/o No Deportations)

Roseline arrived in the UK in September 2004 from Nigeria on a student visa, to study for a Masters Degree at Leeds University.
She unexpectedly developed end stage renal failure in 2005 and remained on dialysis until she was fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant at St. James Hospital, Leeds in July 2009.
Roseline has applied for leave to remain in the UK but has been refused. Roseline's consultant has stated that unless Roseline is able to continue taking immunosuppressant drugs which are costly and unavailable in parts of Nigeria, her transplanted kidney will fail and she would have to resort to dialysis again -a treatment she could not afford. Without this she will die.
Roseline has never been allowed to work and has been supported since 2007 by parishioners from St Augustine's RC Church, Harehills and the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Roseline is loved and respected by her fellow parishioners and many people in the wider community who have formed close friendships with her over the past four years. In spite of her health problems, Roseline has volunteered tirelessly in the parish and is actively involved in a number of community based groups.

Dear Ms. May
Re: Roseline Akhalu HO Reference A1344782:

I am writing to express my very grave concerns at the threatened removal of Roseline Akhalu from the United Kingdom.

Ms Akhalu developed end stage renal failure unexpectedly while she was at the University of Leeds on a study visa. In July 2009 she underwent a kidney transplant at Leeds General Infirmary and she needs to be maintained on immunosuppressant drugs that may not be available in Nigeria.

Ms Akhalu’s Consultant, Dr R J Baker, has stated in a letter dated 22nd November 2010 to her former Member of Parliament Fabian Hamilton, that unless Ms Akhalu is able to continue taking her required medication, her transplant kidney will die and she would have to resort to dialysis again. Since she cannot afford the cost of this treatment, the consequence of removing Ms Akhalu would be fatal within a matter of months or even weeks.

Ms Akhalu has never been allowed to work, but since 2007 she has been supported by parishioners from St Augustine’s RC Church, Harehills and the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Roseline is much loved and respected by her fellow parishioners and many people in the wider community who have formed close friendships with her over the past four years. In spite of her health problems, Roseline has volunteered tirelessly in the parish and is actively involved in a number of community-based groups.

Given the dire consequences that would follow from Roseline’s deportation I therefore call on you to rescind the removal order and to grant Roseline Akhalu leave to remain among her many friends and supporters in Yorkshire.

Yours Sincerely,
